Biography of Mahmoud Darwish
Darwish was born on 13 March 1941 in the Palestinian village of al-Birwa. He grew up during a time of great political upheaval, when Palestine was conquered by Israel after the 1948 Arab-Israeli war. The Darwish family was forced to evacuate their home and became a refugee, and he spent most of his youth in refugee camps in Lebanon and Syria.

Darwish was educated in a refugee camp in Lebanon before attending American University in Beirut. He started writing poetry at a young age, and his first book, “Asafir bila ajniha” (The Wingless Birds), was released in 1964. Darwish has published collections of poems, plays, and novels. essays and memoirs throughout his career. He was also a founding member of the Palestine Writers’ Association and worked as an editor for numerous literary periodicals.
