Notably, according to the NYP report, Iran has recently executed several civilians by hanging. According to the Norway-based Iran Human Rights group, the nation has executed at least 90 people in the past 18 days, making May the “bloodiest month” in the country in the previous five years.
This is despite the Biden administration’s warning to “not carry out these executions.” Journalists and government officials are either praising or denouncing the model for her protest video as Jaberi’s video and attire become popular online.
Jaberi issued a note to her Instagram account to clarify her clothing choice after facing criticism online. “76th Cannes Film Festival 2nd look,” she penned. “My outfit was created by @jilaatelier. In addition to observing the glitz of Cannes, we wanted to make a fashion statement to draw media attention to the unjustifiable executions of Iranian citizens.
The security prevented me from displaying the back of my garment because political comments are not permitted at the film festival, but the meaning of the word “noose” was clearly understood. According to NYP, left-leaning journalist Yashar Ali attacked Jaberi over the video, calling it “disgraceful.”
