News Maggie Gray

Mike Francesa, who had previously retired, was replaced by Grey, Bart Scott and Chris Carlin during an afternoon drive on WFAN in late 2017. She spoke of the encounter with Barrett Sports Media.

According to Grey, it was definitely an overwhelming feeling. “I suppose it would also be very lonely without Chris Carlin and Bart Scott — the three of us starting that show — and without our wonderful relationship. I’m grateful to have those people to lean on and we’ve experienced together because it’s a big deal for the sports talk radio market.

After more than four months, Francesa decided to retire and the trio taking over his position were moved earlier in the day. Carlin eventually lost his job (and soon after, he joined ESPN). Gray claims that she is not a fan of the competitive nature of radio and television presenters.

“I don’t like doing” [argumentative] radio,” Gray said. “I don’t like ‘Mike and the Mad Dog’ [type] where they just argue all the time, or the Stephen A. Smith stuff that makes you argue all the time. I don’t usually admire that. While it’s good to have disagreements, I don’t like it when it gets heated.

Gray was paired with Marc Malusis after Scott left WFAN for ESPN New York. The early afternoon slot on WFAN was eventually taken over by Brandon Tierney and Tiki Barber, as revealed in late 2021, and Gray has teamed up with Andrew Perloff, longtime producer of “Dan Patrick Show, ” on CBS Sports Radio nationwide. At WPIX, Malusis is now a sports presenter.

Gray had to get used to the quirks of regional radio when she switched from Sports Illustrated to WFAN.

According to Grey, I never really watched simple sports in New York, so that took some getting used to. “There are all the same difficulties when developing any new program; it just happened like that [on] a very public platform where a lot of eyes are on us.”

Gray said, “When you’re doing [local radio], no minutiae is too small. “We could discuss the average painkiller for the Yankees, the Mets’ closer or who should start at the third base for the Yankees. It’s a really interesting topic and New Yorkers will find it fascinating.
