Fickell began attending DeSales High School. In 1992, he was a prominent member of the Ohio State Buckeyes defensive unit. From 1993 to 1996, he started 50 consecutive games as a nose guard, a school record.
Then, after graduating from Ohio State in 1997, he signed as an untrained free agent with the NFL’s New Orleans Saints. He then joined the NFL coaching staff at Ohio State as a graduate assistant in 1990.
