In the early hours of August 4, 2021, tragedy struck in North Bergen, New Jersey, when a speeding 2022 Kia Stinger collided with a tractor-trailer, resulting in the deaths of 24-year-old Luis Fernando Cevallos and 27-year-old Alexis Rodriguez. The incident took place around 2:15 a.m. at Tonnelle Avenue and the Paterson Plank Road overpass.
Officer Jon Nunez of the North Bergen Police Department had previously encountered the same Kia Stinger just minutes before the collision. At 1:49 a.m., he had stopped the vehicle for excessive speeding and reckless driving, identifying the driver as Luis Fernando Cevallos and the passenger as Alexis Rodriguez. It was revealed that they were on their first date, and Alexis blamed herself for the reckless driving, although Officer Nunez reassured her that it was not her fault. Luis was issued multiple citations, including reckless driving and violation of provisional license restrictions.

However, shortly after this encounter, tragedy unfolded as the same Kia Stinger was involved in a fatal collision with a tractor-trailer. The impact was severe, and both Luis and Alexis were pronounced deceased at the scene. Subsequent investigations revealed that excessive speed, reaching 124 MPH just 5 seconds before the crash, was a significant contributing factor.
Alexis Rodriguez, an Edgewater native and Bergenfield resident, was an accomplished individual who had graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University. She tragically lost her life in this devastating collision.
Community members rallied in support, raising funds to aid the families of both Luis Cevallos and Alexis Rodriguez during this difficult time. Over $18,407 was raised for Cevallos’ family, and approximately $2,400 was raised in honor of Rodriguez, reflecting the outpouring of grief and support from the community.
This heart-wrenching incident serves as a somber reminder of the devastating consequences of reckless driving and the importance of responsible behavior on the road to prevent such tragic losses.
