Lucia Scalisi, an authority on The Repair Shop, spoke on Wednesday’s BBC Breakfast episode about the show’s most recent season. The crew was moved to tears as she described how she saved a painting from the Nazis during World War II by repairing it. She stated that “we all cried,” but she insisted that these were tears of happiness.
Guest Maria Kirk, 74, delivers a photo of Madonna and Child stained, broken and wrinkled in dramatic scenes that have not yet aired. According to Maria, the artwork serves as her only link to the Ukrainian family and a “beacon of peace”. Her family home in Skowiatyn, Western Ukraine, has artwork on display in the village church.
It was a gift from her grandfather’s father, and when World War II broke out, the family tried to keep it.
Maria said in the preview of the episode: “My grandfather Joseph has passed away. My mother, Irena, aunt Stefania and grandmother Halyna have fled to Poland. On one side were the Russians and on the other the advancing Germans.
They take the picture, they decide. They removed it from the frame, wrapped it up, and sewn it inside the lining of a winter coat.
Sadly, they were all taken prisoner by the Germans, who later locked them up in a forced labor camp in northern Germany, where they frequently changed their coats.
While Maria’s grandmother Halyna died of malnutrition, Stefania and Irena managed to escape the horrors of the camp.
“I don’t understand why they took this picture instead of something more useful, but now I get it,” she continued. “It was the priceless thread that connected them to their father—family and classical way of life. “The painting is a beacon of peace, of faith and of beauty out of the darkness and horrors of war.”
