News Louise Olsen
The lovely environment where Louise Olsen’s paintbrush has created a brand new work aptly named Hidden Lake. Pollination, Louise’s first performance as a painter, was inspired by the calm waters, surrounded by eucalyptus in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. This is a big change for someone whose name has been associated with Dinosaur Designs for the past 35 years.
But an even more compelling story is hidden behind the work. In a new phase in Louise’s life, she and her renowned artist father John Olsen peacefully paint together in his peaceful country retreat. All canvases have been created during this time.
Their days now have a calm rhythm. They retire to their studio at John’s end every morning after breakfast to start the day. Louise’s studio is large and airy with large doors opening to the lake outside. She often ventures there with her easel, canvas, and paint bucket to bask in the ever-changing light and peaceful soundscape from nearby ducks and birds.
John often starts muttering something about a nice morning job worthy of a glass of wine around midday. Funny dad; he enjoys a glass of wine in the middle of the day, and sometimes, if it’s 11:30, I’ll ask, “Dad, is it a bit early for a glass of wine?” However, he will reply, “Better have one at eleven than eleven!” ‘And his eyes sparkled when I said, ‘Okay, let’s open a bottle of rosé,’ Louise giggled sweetly.
This period not only represents Louise’s rebirth as a painter — publicly at least, since she’s been painting all her life — but it also represents something of reconciliation. between John, Louise and her brother Tim after a long and tumultuous relationship with them. late stepmother Katharine. Louise explained that after her stepmother passed away in late 2016, “all these doors opened up”.
Since then, the three of them regularly spend weekends together, Tim working on his upcoming biography and John and Louise painting, before putting their respective projects down to eat. home-cooked dinner, have a glass of wine and talk endlessly.
Louise temporarily moved in with John during a recent forced recluse before returning to her husband Stephen Ormandy and their daughter Camille in Sydney. “Dad is now 92 years old; he is remarkable for his age, but his body is aging and he uses a walker although mentally sharp. He’s so happy to have us here to take care of him and let us have these interesting conversations.
He has an incredible amount of knowledge in both history and art. He recalls his visit to Paris and drinks coffee with [American sculptor Alexander] jar. I consider myself really lucky that we have a similar passion.
