News Lorena Cesarini
Italian actress Lorena Cesarini co-hosted the Sanremo Music Festival on Wednesday night with TV personality Amadeus, and she made a powerful statement against racism right on stage.
Cesarini, who grew up in Rome but was born in Dakar to a Senegalese mother and Italian father, said she was “very proud” to be Italian.
However, after learning she had been chosen as one of five co-hosts for Sanremo, she began to witness a phenomenon she had never encountered before: racial abuse on social media.
At 34, I knew I wasn’t an Italian girl like everyone else, but rather that I was black. Up to this point, no one at school, university, work or on the streetcar has felt the need to inform me of this, but now “it is clear to some people of color that a problem, to the extent that they want to let people know.”
Some of the comments Cesarini read online included “She doesn’t deserve it, they just chose her because she’s black” and that “Outsiders (non-EU citizens) have arrived” as well. “They must have called her to wash the stairs and water the flowers.”
At first she said, “I felt horrible, then I got angry, before it went away,” but she couldn’t help but wonder, “Why? Why are there people offended by my presence on this stage and those who oppose the color of my skin?
The most important thing is to ask why, to avoid “clichés, preconceived notions, insults and judgments on the tram,” Cesarini emotionally told the Sanremo audience that she “didn’t.” here to teach you a lesson, I won’t even be able to do it.
While crying while reading a passage from Tahar Ben Jelloun’s Explaining Racism to My Daughter, Cesarini concluded his speech by declaring that racism “has no scientific basis, because for there is only one race.”
