Liz Cambage announces shocking Nigeria switch: “In cahoots.”

Former Australian Opals star Liz Cambage has decided to play for Nigeria, whose teammates she is alleged to have insulted racially during a 2021 pre-Olympics exhibition match.

Cambage allegedly said, “Go back to your Third World country,” during Australia’s match against Nigeria before to the Tokyo Games, which resulted to her expulsion from the Opals team. She has not represented Australia since the event.

In an unexpected change of events, Cambage, whose father is Nigerian, now asserts that she has applied to play for Nigeria.

“Why do Nigeria want me to represent them when I live in Australia?” Cambage informed Taylor Rooks of Bleacher Report.

“We’re asking for my departure from the Australian team so I can play for Nigeria. I’ve been collaborating and speaking with them ever since all that transpired. I’m trying to say that people don’t know the truth.

Cambage has consistently denied uttering racist remarks at Nigerians, despite the evidence of players from both teams that day.

The illustrious Opal Jenna O’Hea informed the Australian Broadcast Commission that she heard Cambage say, “Go back to your third-world country.” Unidentified Nigerian athletes said News Corp that Cambage dubbed opponent’s center Victoria Macaulay a “monkey” after elbowing her earlier.

Cambage, however, is adamant about her innocence and claims to have access to recordings of the incident that will clear her.

“Not many girls and I get along. I don’t like using racist slurs, she said.

I don’t work like that. I strongly support Black people. I didn’t say any of these things to these girls.

Release the cassettes. Never have I owned the recordings. open up the tapes. If you want to know the truth, leak the tapes. All Australians who have seen the recordings have kept the tapes a secret and continued to lie about what was on them.

“I want others to see it. Place it in plain view. It was never mine. Even worse, I wasn’t even in possession of it at the time. I couldn’t even defend myself with it. I had to pay lawyers to get a tape with my own assault on it.

Promise Amukamara of Nigeria tweeted in reaction to Cambage’s claims: “I’m sorry but this is untrue.

She only ever had “cahoots” with the former coach of our national team, who is no longer in that position, so there’s that. She is the only person from either team that essentially has a different story, so you guys figure it out.

I’m sorry but this is False. Lol https://t.co/eQ0L9PQTNa

Prior to the 2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup, when Australia went on to win a bronze medal, Opals head coach Sandy Brondello stated ESPN that she had spoken to Cambage about joining the Australian team, but that the center had indicated no interest in doing so.

Since Cambage was not available, the Opals turned to WNBA great Lauren Jackson, and thanks to her heroics, Australia defeated Canada to win the bronze medal. Jackson finished the contest with 31 points.

Without Liz Cambage on the team, she has previously excelled for the Opals, but we are aware that she won’t be there going forward, so others have an opportunity. According to Brondello, who spoke to ESPN, we need to reassess the type of game we want to play.

Given the size of the commitment, Jan Sterling and I contacted each athlete by phone or email to ascertain their level of interest. Liz had come to the conclusion that she didn’t want to do it. We respect you for that, so don’t worry. I’m focusing right now on the talent we do have.

When questioned about her individual experiences with racism at Opal’s, Cambage admitted that she had.

In the Bleacher Report podcast, Cambage acknowledged, “I have really struggled with the Australian team.”

“I’ve said it numerous times. I’ve dealt with blackface-wearing teammates, dishonest coaches, and coaches that encouraged rival players to criticize me in the media. There have been several of them.

“I sincerely hope that Australia releases me and FIBA approves it because my fans miss seeing me play. For me, another Olympics would be fantastic. Paris is a wonderful place. There is nothing like an Olympic Village; it is one of the most inspiring places ever.

“My prior Olympic experiences were terrible. Rio’s Olympics were a disaster. One of the worst experiences of my life, the Olympics in Rio were the fault of the coaching staff and team.

I would appreciate a new beginning with teammates who value understanding, admiration, and respect the same way I do. I’ve been talking to a Nigerian coach, and he’s had my back.

In July 2022, Cambage left the Los Angeles Sparks, leaving the WNBA temporarily without a team.

The Israeli squad Maccabi Bnot Ashdod was the most recent team she had a contract with.
