LaTanya Richardson Jackson (née Richardson; born October 21, 1949) is an actress from the United States. She started her career in off-Broadway shows before moving on to television and film roles.

She was born in the city of Atlanta, Georgia. In 1970, she met actor Samuel L. Jackson, then a student at the all-male Morehouse Institution, while attending Atlanta’s Spelman College (America’s oldest private historically black liberal arts college for women).

Career

To date, Richardson’s most notable film performance was as the primary antagonist, the hypercritical Paulina Pritchett, in the 2003 musical The Fighting Temptations.

Richardson was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Lead Actress in a Play in 2014 for her work in the play A Raisin in the Sun. This was her second Broadway performance, after her debut in the 2009 production of Joe Turner’s Come and Gone. In the 2018-19 season, she also performed on Broadway in Aaron Sorkin’s adaption of To Kill a Mockingbird.
