Career
Benson was unbeaten (14-0 with a 1.40 ERA) during his junior year at the University, striking out 178 batters in 142 innings thrown. He later guided the Tigers to the NCAA tournament. Benson was selected the Player of the Year in College Baseball. He was named Baseball America Player of the Year and ACC Player of the Year as a Tiger. Furthermore, he departed Clemson before getting his diploma. In terms of his professional career, Benson was selected first overall in the 1996 Major League Baseball Draft.
On April 9, 1999, he made his big league debut. Furthermore, his greatest season came with Pittsburgh in 2000, when he set career highs in earned run average, strikeouts, innings worked, and games played, as well as his only double-digit strikeout games.
