In the late 1980s, Potter joined the Brooklyn Central Police Department as a patrol officer to begin his career in law enforcement. She rose through the ranks over the next three decades, working as a union manager, community police officer and field training officer. She was one of the department’s highest ranking officers after being promoted to sergeant in 2007.
Potter has received a number of honors and awards throughout her career for her contributions. She was recognized in 2006 for assisting in the arrest of a criminal who was the subject of a high-speed chase. She was among several police officers commended in 2017 for their actions following a shooting at a nearby nightclub.
Daunte Wright was shot and killed by Potter on April 11, 2021, in Downtown Brooklyn, Minnesota, during a routine traffic check. Police believe Potter intended to use her stun gun, but accidentally pulled it out and fired one shot, hitting Wright in the chest. Wright then sped into his car but crashed a short distance later, dying there from his injuries.
Potter was charged with second-degree manslaughter following the shooting, which prompted her to resign from the Central Brooklyn Police Department. In the coming months, her trial is expected to begin.
During a traffic encounter in suburban Minneapolis, former Minnesota police officer Kim Potter shot dead a 20-year-old Black man Daunte Wright, making nationwide news. Potter was found guilty of first and second degree manslaughter on December 23, 2021.
Legal experts expressed surprise at the decision, noting that such a conviction was impossible just a few years ago.
