Falls Church was rocked by a devastating car accident on November 20, 2023, resulting in the tragic death of 14-year-old Longfellow Middle School student Kevin Guardado Landaverde. Kevin succumbed to injuries sustained in the accident on Thanksgiving Day, leaving the community in mourning.
The accident involved seven local teenagers, leaving six in critical condition. Kevin and his brother Jay, both students at Longfellow Middle School and McLean High School, were among those involved. While Jay was discharged from the hospital the same day, Kevin tragically lost his life due to the severity of his injuries.
Ashley Dempsey posted on Facebook,
“This accident occurred down the street from our home and Amelie is friends with some of the teens involved. Nothing less than tragic to lose a young person so suddenly”
In the wake of this heartbreaking loss, a GoFundMe page titled “Kevin Guardado Landaverde” was initiated by McLean resident Christy Lucia to aid the family with funeral costs and other expenses during this incredibly difficult time. The fundraiser has seen an outpouring of support, reaching $13,029 USD out of its $50,000 goal.
The Longfellow Middle School community, described as a safe, cooperative, and nurturing environment, is reeling from this tragedy. The school embraces a diverse student body and is known for its dedication to providing a rigorous curriculum with personalized attention, supported by an active PTA and strong family outreach.
