Ketch Secor, a founding member of the Old Crow Medicine Show, invited for an interview while stopping in Tulsa in late March, and there was no shortage of topics to cover. The New Old Crow record is coming out, the tour has only just begun, and the two new members of the band have joined in at just the right time. During next week’s Azalea Festival, the band will perform at the Live Oak Bank Pavilion in downtown Wilmington. The horrific incident that happened on March 27 at Covenant School in Nashville is probably what Secor thinks about most. It left three 9-year-olds and three adults dead.
He added: “I have two school-age children so I’m thinking a lot about my dear Nashville right now. “My children are the same age as the three murdered children.” He went on to say that his children took part in an active shooting drill earlier that week at school. When he asked how things were going, his daughter’s reaction was appalling.
She commented: “Wow, that’s very scary, especially since my butt sticks out when I’m sitting behind my desk. So there’s no room for me. I just got a bad number. I could very well be dead. Secor has criticized adults, especially lawmakers, for doing little after the disaster. He called it “the black mark of society.”
Secord continued, “I will never stop talking about it, and I will never stop supporting Tennessee’s production of weapons of mass destruction that American citizens cannot use. They are intended for the armed forces. These are combat weapons.
The lead vocalist, banjo and fiddle player, and lead songwriter for Old Crow have all sung live for 25 years. According to Secor, the Old Crow Medicine Show has grown into a show that has been significantly influential in original music and a pioneer in the revival of string bands in the music industry.
Chance McCoy, Joe Andrews and Charlie Worsham were replaced by Mike Harris (banjo/guitar), Mason Via (guitar) and drummer Jerry Pentecost as the band emerged from the pandemic. They also have a newly renovated studio near Nashville. There, the most recent iteration of Old Crow spawned their widely acclaimed 2022 album, “Paint This Town,” as well as their recently completed album ready for release.
