Until recently, Kemah Bob’s main claim to fame was that her educational institution was located in a city famous for the 1993 siege of a ranch housed by a religious sect.
Waco was a “nothing happened” town when the Texan comedian, who now lives in London, arrived at a “private Christian university full of conservatives in central Texas” when she was just one year old. She told me when we met that the diverse audience she serves with both podcasts and comedy shows “isn’t really taken by the rest of the industry.”
She said, “And I was like, wait a second. There must be people who want to hear from people like me and people who aren’t like me, but don’t know where to look. because we [people of colour or LGBTQ+] are usually the only ones on the show.
Live recorded podcasts are an extension of the increasingly popular FOC night. Bob compares, and after each featured comic takes a small action, they all engage in a spontaneous, lively conversation. Topics covered ranged from endometriosis to “business crap**”, “flirting” and divorce, football and “old Scottish men”. In one particularly memorable conversation, the topic of whether it’s acceptable to want a superyacht to fall into a rabbit hole.
