Kaylee, David Lee Housden, and Alexander killed in apparent murder-suicide

Winston-Salem, NC – In a heartbreaking incident, two young teenagers lost their lives in a devastating murder-suicide, leaving the community in shock. The Winston-Salem Police Department is actively investigating the incident, which unfolded around 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Water Lily Circle.

Upon responding to reports of gunfire, officers discovered the lifeless bodies of David Housden, 55, Alexander David Housden, 20, and Kaylee Nicole Housden, 16, all succumbing to gunshot wounds. Police Chief Penn reported that indications suggest David Housden took his own life after tragically ending the lives of his two children.

The heart-wrenching discovery was made after a distress call from the victims’ mother. Kaylee Housden, a vibrant color guard member and student at Atkins High School, and Alexander, a student at Winston-Salem State University, have left a void in their respective academic communities.

Superintendent Tricia McManus announced that therapy services would be available for Kaylee’s classmates at Atkins High School, with a crisis squad on standby to provide support during this difficult time.

With the deaths of Kaylee and Alexander, Winston-Salem has seen an alarming increase in homicides in 2023, with the count reaching 43 and 44, compared to 33 in the same period in 2022. Authorities are probing into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and are exploring whether David Housden had a history of mental illness.

This marks the second murder-suicide in Winston-Salem this year, following the tragic incident in April involving Ethel Steele, who took her own life and the lives of her three children on Brookhill Drive. The community has been urged to seek mental health support from the numerous organizations available, emphasizing the importance of reaching out in times of distress. Seven lives have been lost in Winston-Salem as a result of this devastating incident, underscoring the need for continued awareness and support for mental health.
