Schmeichel joined City in 2002. In January 2006, he joined Darlington on loan. On January 14, 2006, at the Darlington Arena, he made his professional debut against Peterborough United.
From January 2007 to the end of the 2006-07 season, he was loaned to Falkirk. In 2007, he was man of the match against Rangers. Schmeichel debuted for Manchester City in August 2007 against West Ham. On August 19, 2007, he played against Manchester United, City’s rivals.
