News Karen Swensen
When WWL-TV host Karen Swensen decided to leave her local New Orleans television station, she paid tribute to a sizable group of people to whom she told their stories. The famous journalist worked at the station for many years while dealing with her personal struggles.
Doctors discovered a benign tumor in Swensen’s uterus in late 2000. Six weeks before the wedding, she underwent surgery and doctors warned she would probably never have a baby. When she had a daughter, medical advances helped change that.
Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005. Her own home was destroyed while Swensen was broadcasting WWL-TV, covering and covering the storm.
Swensen explained to David Begnaud, CBS News’ chief national correspondent, how deeply this has affected her.
“I have been going down this rabbit hole for years, just remembering the house we lost, the friends we lost and the way of life we lost,” she added. Swensen will be leaving WWL-TV to work as a morning show host in Boston, her birthplace. After a few years, Swensen returned to New Orleans. Her family will soon face more difficulties.
“We moved back to New Orleans in 2011. Six months later, my husband was diagnosed with advanced cancer… My daughter was just nine years old,” she recalls.
“Everything has a purpose,” she said. “I’ve been through a lot of changes in my life and if I can help others navigate it a little easier, it’s all worth it.”
For this reason, she left her lucrative broadcasting career to start a business called Life’s About Change. Her business only produces American-made goods. Merchandise marketing businesses are created by people whose lives have been changed.
After overcoming personal obstacles, Amanda Claridy and Jenna Collins are now successful potters, who carve inspirational quotes onto Swensen’s line of coffee mugs. Claridy claims that we are living examples of how a life can be transformed.
“A doctor guiding my husband and I through his cancer journey came up with the idea of candles. On the day of his diagnosis, she told him, “I want you to take a candle and then I want you to watch the wax and your cancer cells go away.” ‘Visualization,’ she said,’” Swensen recounts.
She expressed her wish that everyone who buys the candle can glimpse the flame and reflect on their own inner fortitude.
Swensen has been balancing his work in television and finding unique candle sellers for years. One of those veterans made some of those candles.
