She is of African American descent and of American nationality. Her father is an artist and professor at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, and her mother is an administrative assistant.
Her family later relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in 1991 from the Atlanta College of Arts. She then went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1994.
