News Julian Leeser

After choosing to leave the front row in favor of the side that agreed in the Indigenous Voices referendum before Parliament, Liberal MP Julian Leeser defended the party’s strength.

The former shadow attorney general and Indigenous Australians spokesman claims he still supports the party and leader Peter Dutton but disagrees with him on the Voice vote during an appearance on Today This Morning . He will move to the back seat while still being a team member.

He told Today’s Sarah Abo, “The Liberal Party is not ruined, I support Peter Dutton’s leadership, I love the party, we just have different views on the subject.

“I’ve been a longtime Voice supporter, I’ve been there since the very beginning, and before I was a member of parliament, I set up an organization to encourage people to support Voice.” Because you have to stand up for something, even if it costs you, I feel that I have to resign and adopt a different stance for the sake of personal conscience and morality.

Following Dutton’s announcement last week that the Liberals would oppose the Voice, the decision was made. Instead, it will run campaigns in the First Nations community for local and regional organizations. Leeser stated that while supporting the Voice, he wanted the model of government to change.

I believe the government model is flawed, so I will spend the next six weeks campaigning for a better model. In my opinion, this could benefit Indigenous Australians.

Leeser is the third Coalition member to leave recently due to Voice. After Dutton announced his Voice policy, former Indigenous Australians minister, Ken Wyatt, left the Liberal Party. Meanwhile MP Andrew Gee has left the Country and will now serve as an independent.

The Nationalists, a minor coalition partner of the Liberal Party, had previously announced their opposition to the Voice. Lesser will support amendments to Voices from the Bench, including adopting local and regional policy, and allowing the government to change Voices over time. He stated: “Politics is complicated, but I have highlighted ethics. I can continue to be a member of the Liberal Party, continue to dedicate myself to Peter Dutton’s leadership and be able to run on this particular topic, and that’s a strength.
