Sierra Canyon star Juju Watkins was named Gatorade Women’s Basketball Player of the Year.
Watkins was surprised by the announcement of NCAA and WNBA legend Candace Parker, herself a two-time Gatorade champion, when teammates, friends and family came to her school with the trophy. The 38th edition of the award celebrates excellence on the playground, in the classroom, and in the community.
“Juju’s dedication on and off the pitch has earned her a place in the Gatorade Player of the Year family, a title shared by sports icons like Jayson Tatum, Derek Jeter , Elena Delle Donne and countless community leaders,” stated Michael Del Pozzo, president and general manager of Gatorade Portfolio. We eagerly look forward to her future contributions, both on and off the court.
In 2022–23, Watkins, Gatorade California’s Player of the Year from the previous year, guided Sierra Canyon to a 31–1 record and into the semi-finals of the state’s CIF Open Division tournament. In addition to 27.5 points per game, she’s averaging 13.7 bounces, 3.6 assists, 2.5 steals, and 1.7 saves. McDonald’s All-American has a verbal commitment to USC and is ESPN’s top-rated 2023 recruit. She was named MVP of the U17 FIBA World Cup last summer and helped Team USA win the competition.
In addition to working toy drives, food banks and kids basketball camps in the Los Angeles area, Watkins, who is represented by Klutch Sports for NIL, has also volunteered on behalf of Hands for Hope, Shoes for Souls and Watts Labor Community Action Committee. Parker, Paige Bueckers, Azzi Fudd, Breanna Stewart, Skylar Diggins, Nneka Ogwumike, Maya Moore, Tina Charles and Lisa Leslie are on the short list of Gatorade winners.
