Today, the city of New York solemnly commemorates the 40th anniversary of a tragic incident that claimed the life of a brave officer, Police Officer Joseph McCormack. On September 29, 1983, Officer McCormack, a member of Emergency Services Squad 2, valiantly confronted a barricaded armed individual in a Bronx apartment. The New York Police Department tirelessly attempted to negotiate with the assailant for four hours before he emerged and unleashed a hail of gunfire, resulting in a devastating explosion beneath Officer McCormack’s armpit, ultimately leading to his untimely demise.
To honor his memory, a memorial mass was held at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Brooklyn, attended by his widow, Susan, and two of his children, Joseph, a retired NYPD sergeant who also served on Truck 2, and Jessica. The ceremony was attended by esteemed individuals such as Dan Tirelli, the first vice president, and board officials Joe Strong and Kevin Murphy.
Susan McCormack, a widow who displayed unwavering resilience, became a beacon of strength for others in similar situations. She founded Survivors of the Shield and served as its President during its formative years. Through her selfless volunteer work, Susan significantly improved the quality of life for widows and their children in and around New York, leaving an enduring impact on the community.
On that fateful day, officers swiftly discerned the danger posed by the armed suspect. Officer McCormack heroically attempted to reason with the individual, but tragically, the assailant opened fire upon stepping out the back door. Officer McCormack sustained a fatal wound under his armpit, an area unprotected by his vest. In the ensuing confrontation, the suspect was killed as fellow officers bravely returned fire.
NYPD shared a post on fb on the death of Joseph:
Forty years ago today, Officer Joseph McCormack paid the ultimate sacrifice when he was shot & killed in the line-of-duty while attempting to talk to a barricaded, emotional disturbed individual. Today, and everyday, we renew our vow to #NeverForget.
Officer McCormack, a dedicated servant of the New York City Police Department for 15 years, had recently transferred to the esteemed Emergency Service Unit. His sacrifice left behind a grieving family – his wife and three children. In a poignant continuation of his legacy, his son submitted an application to the NYPD in 1999 and was duly accepted, embodying the spirit of courage and commitment that defined his father’s life.
As the city remembers Officer Joseph McCormack, his bravery, sacrifice, and the enduring impact of his family’s resilience serve as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers and their families in the pursuit of public safety and justice.
