John Joseph was born on January 31, 1956 in London. He is the son of Eileen Lydia and John Christopher Lydon. He spent his summer vacation in County Cork, his mother’s hometown, where he was harassed for speaking with a British accent, despite the fact that he was traveling on an Irish passport. Because his mother was often ill, John had to take care of his four brothers like an eldest child. As a child, he was a member of a neighborhood gang and was often involved in fights with other groups.
