Sarasota, FL – mourns the passing of retired Riverview High football coach John Sprague, who peacefully departed on Friday, November 17, 2023, surrounded by his cherished family. His passing was confirmed through a heartfelt social media post, expressing the community’s deep sorrow over losing such an esteemed figure.
Coach Sprague’s illustrious career spanned decades, starting in 1981 when he assumed the role of head football coach for the Rams. His dedication endured for an impressive 30 years, following which he transitioned to become the school’s athletic director and presently served as the boys’ golf coach.
Throughout his tenure, Coach Sprague’s leadership led the Rams to remarkable achievements, boasting a commendable 198-68 record. Under his guidance, Sarasota-Riverview claimed nine District Championships, four Regional Championships, and secured the State Runner-Up position twice. Notably, he earned Nike’s Coach of the Year title twice and the FHSAA Coach of the Year three times.
Beyond accolades, Coach Sprague’s impact transcended victories. He viewed football as a tool for nurturing young minds, emphasizing discipline and camaraderie beyond the field. His players regarded him not only as a coach but as a mentor and father figure, emphasizing personal growth alongside on-field performance.
