John Roland News Anchor Wikipedia, Obituary, Wife, Md, Bekley – A representative for Fox Television reported that John Roland, who has worked for Channel 5 in New York for more than three decades as a reporter and presenter, passed away on Sunday. He was 81.

Roland left KTTV in Los Angeles in December 1969 to work as a joint duty reporter for sister station Metromedia WNEW in New York. Before taking over from Bill Jorgensen on the 10 p.m. top show in 1979, he covered politics on weekdays and hosted 10 p.m. on weekends. (The station was taken over by News Corp. and Fox in 1986, and its name was changed to WNYW.)

Roland retired to Florida in June 2004 after leaving the 10 p.m. position in 2003 to broadcast brand new news at 5 and 6 p.m.

He added on the radio as he left, “I want to thank you for bringing me into your home all these years. I never took it for granted and always took it as an honor.

Years of working with Roland led Rosanna Scotto to say: “Sitting next to John is always a learning experience. He enjoys his candid communication and writing style. Anchoring next to him during the 9/11 attacks makes that all the more obvious.

Roland, a native of Pittsburgh, attended California State University at Long Beach and graduated in 1964. Two years later, he joined NBC News in Los Angeles. He covered the 1968 assassination of Robert F. Kennedy and other breaking news topics for KTTV.

Three armed men stormed the Old Racing Club in Manhattan in 1983 while Roland and a friend were having a late dinner there. They ask for money. Before the two other bandits attacked him, Roland shot one of them in the leg after disarming him.

When an argument with a homeless woman aired in 1988, he was suspended and later allowed to return. He developed diverticulitis in 2002 and nearly died at work; he then tells viewers about his near-death experience.

In films such as Hero at Large (1980), Eyewitness (1981), The Scout (1994) and The Object of My Affection (1998), Roland appeared either as a reporter or as himself.
