BROOKLYN, N.Y. — A sense of mourning envelops the community of Allegheny College Athletics as they remember the life and legacy of Jermaine Mitchell, a former offensive line player and dedicated assistant coach. Jermaine, a beloved father of one from Brooklyn, N.Y., tragically passed away from a heart attack. His untimely departure on Sunday, August 8, 2023, has left his family and friends in profound grief.
Jermaine Mitchell, a 2011 graduate of Allegheny College, had returned to his alma mater in February 2021 to take on the role of Assistant Coach for the Allegheny College Athletics Football team. With a decade of coaching experience under his belt, Jermaine’s dedication to the sport was evident. He spent four years as an assistant coach at Gannon University, contributing to the development of their football program within the NCAA Division II. His responsibilities included coaching the defensive line, acting as an assistant run game coordinator, and serving as Pro Liaison and Director of Strength & Conditioning.
Before his tenure at Gannon University, Jermaine had a two-year stint as an assistant coach at Charleston (W. Va.), focusing on coaching safeties and linebackers while supporting various other aspects of the team under the guidance of the head coach.
Jermaine Mitchell, fondly recognized by his jersey number 11, was born on September 7, 1989. He was the son of Rudolph and Patricia Mitchell. His academic pursuits led him to major in Economics with a minor in Math. Beyond his achievements on the field and in the coaching realm, Jermaine’s character left an indelible mark on those who knew him. His kind spirit and empathy resonated with individuals from all walks of life, regardless of demographics or social status.
Leaving behind his devoted wife, Olivia, and their two-month-old daughter, Maya, Jermaine’s unexpected passing has prompted his family to create a GoFundMe Account to aid in raising funds for his funeral expenses. In their heartfelt message, they share, “We need more Jermaine in our life. We can be that. Let’s all be a little bit more like Jermaine.”
