She is grateful for her ability to talk because as the victim of a serious sexual assault, it is a miracle that she can speak so. On Friday at the Stanly County Agricultural-Civic Center, she spoke to guests at the Butterfly House Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Breakfast about how she overcame abuse.

The Butterfly House provides assessment and treatment support for children who have experienced neglect, sexual abuse or physical abuse. According to its director Amy Yow, the organization helped 280 children in Stanly last year, up 30% from any previous year.

In front of a group of about 200 people, Schuett described how, when she was eight years old on August 10, 1990, she was abducted from her apartment in Dickinson, Texas by a stranger. He covered her mouth and nose as she tried to scream.

Schuett testified that he took her to a wooded area and raped her there. She broke down. She was lying naked atop an anthill when she arrived, her throat slashed from ear to ear. “I prayed because I knew I was going to die,” she said.

She was found by some children playing chase and hide and seek after spending almost 12 hours in the field, and they rushed her to the hospital. Although unable to speak, Schuett was able to describe his attacker in writing, and composite sketches of the two were created.

Doctors at the time informed her that she would never be able to speak again. She regained her voice during her two-week hospital stay despite their diagnosis. She resisted the attacker’s attempts to intimidate her into silence.

For years, Schuett’s case remained unsolved despite the efforts of investigators. She never lost hope during this time. Schuett relentlessly recounts her kidnapping and murder plot in the voice that was returned to her. She created her own website and shared her story with everyone who would listen.

The case investigators, Dickinson Police Detective Tim Cromie and Houston FBI Agent Richard Rennison, recalled a letter Schuett left behind shortly after the attack that read, “His name is Dennis.” After Bradford was taken into custody, Rennison and Cromie convinced him to confess to the kidnapping, rape, and attempted murder of Schuett. Months before the trial was scheduled to begin, in May 2010, Schuett received what she described as “the worst phone call of her life”.

“I put a lot of effort into remembering every detail. “I wanted the chance to testify against him in court and read my victim impact statement,” she said. “I want to watch this to the end.” Exactly 20 years after her abduction, a few months later, she visited Bradford’s cemetery on August 10, 2010 and read the victim impact statement.

“You know, I can’t help but wonder if he’s listening to everything I say,” she whispered as she read it. Suddenly, a fire ant bit her leg, which she took as a sign from God that Bradford must have heard her.

Schuett’s story has come to a satisfying conclusion. She was predicted by doctors that she would not be able to conceive, but she managed to overcome the difficulty and give birth to Jenna and Jonah. We’ve all gathered for a reason, and that reason is the kids, so seeing you all here today overwhelmed her. Just be aware that they are defenseless, an important part of our lives and communities, and you should continue to donate to the Butterfly House.

She ended her statement by saying that “we can finally win over crime, one voice at a time” if everyone works harder.
