News Jennifer Finney Boylan
Boylan feels cut off from her former life after coming out as transgender in her 40s. Her new book, she says, is a “memoir of masculinity, told in a way that a foreigners can talk about their homeland.”
Boylan admits that some members of the transgender community may object to the idea that she’s been through “adolescence.”
A lot of people believe they’ve always been who they are, and alluding to a previous stage of your life in a different way is really disrespectful, she says. But even though I respect that point of view, I had this experience that I now find it difficult to connect with.
Boylan says there were times when she couldn’t speak out what was in her heart while still living as a boy and then as a man. However, she has never had to hide her feelings for the dogs. Her autobiography is told through the eyes of 7 dogs that she cherished over the years.
Sometimes it’s hard for her to recall what life was like in that world, but when she thinks about dogs, she adds, “it becomes really clear.” The dog I owned as a boy was one of them. When I was a teenager, there was a dog. Also, there is one from when I was a stylish student and another from when I was a husband, boyfriend, and father.
