USC’s new athletic director is Jennifer Cohen.
President Carol L. Folt appointed Jennifer Cohen as the new athletic director at USC on Monday. After participating in intercollegiate athletics for more than three decades, Cohen will join the university’s renowned athletics program on Tuesday.
Cohen comes to USC from the University of Washington, where she served as the athletic director for the last seven years, and will hold the Charles Griffin Cale Director of Athletics’ Chair. She has worked at Washington for 25 years and has previously held a number of positions in the administration of intercollegiate athletics at Pacific Lutheran University, the University of Puget Sound, and Texas Tech University. She will hold the role for the first time as a woman and the tenth director of athletics at USC.
Folt remarked, “We set a high bar when we were describing the requirements for our next director of athletics. “We had a huge list of outstanding individuals who desired to attend USC and triumph on the highest platform. Jen Cohen truly stood out because of her background, commitment to students’ achievement, and well-known abilities as a team builder. She is a formidable competitor who, like all Trojans, is driven to triumph ethically. She will lead with a culture of honesty, cooperation, and dedication to success, I am convinced.
Cohen, a native of Southern California, expressed her excitement at joining the Trojan Family at this pivotal period. The USC community’s desire to always Fight On with integrity and unwavering passion in pursuit of excellence both on and off the field is something Cohen said he has long respected. The opportunity to return to Southern California as USC’s director of athletics and formally become a member of the Trojan Family is a once-in-a-lifetime privilege.
Strong emphasis on student academic and athletic achievement under the new USC sports director
During the hiring process, Folt claimed to have consulted with a large number of student-athletes, coaches, employees, and other parties. Folt asserted that Cohen meets every essential need for the job and places a high emphasis on the academic and athletic achievement of his students. The university received help from Parker Executive Search throughout the procedure.
One of Folt’s “moonshots” for the institution is to reimagine athletics. Her goal is to create the best athletics program in the country, complete with elite leadership and modernized facilities. In a comprehensive round of improvements, she recently unveiled the university’s strategic plan for all 21 sports programs.
These improvements include the construction of Rawlinson Stadium, the new home of the USC women’s lacrosse and soccer teams, as well as significant upgrades to Dedeaux Field and the Galen Center arena for USC baseball. Future improvements will involve, among other things, enlarging the John McKay Center, improving the dining hall for student-athletes, and upgrading the golf practice area.
The opening of Rawlinson Stadium, which will be a cutting-edge home for the Women of Troy when it is finished in 2025, coincides with a significant year for Title IX, the historic law that has driven women’s sporting prowess for the past 50 years.
This strategic vision, along with other components of Folt’s athletics moonshot, positions USC Athletics for long-term success through Title IX compliance, world-class facilities, and creative space utilization. The university is also putting together a number of sites for the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.
These adjustments are made in advance of USC’s planned admission to the Big Ten, a league that values both academic and athletic achievement. USC Athletics achieved a multiyear 2023 NCAA Academic Progress Rate of 990, breaking the previous departmental record. The Graduation Success Rate of USC student-athletes reached an all-time high of 93% in 2022, marking the ninth year in a row that the important metric increased.
27 members of the First Team All-Americans and 16 members of the All-Pac-12 First Team were awarded to USC student-athletes during the academic year 2022–2023; 11 teams finished in the top 25; 16 teams made postseason appearances; and USC was named the Crosstown Cup champion. In addition, USC football was unbeaten at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in the 2022 season under coach Lincoln Riley, and Caleb Williams won the Heisman Trophy, making him the sixth official winner of the trophy for the school in the history of collegiate football. Additionally, USC’s women’s beach volleyball team earned its third consecutive NCAA title.
Six USC teams, including men’s basketball, football, tennis, and volleyball, as well as women’s basketball and golf, recruited and signed the top player in their respective 2023 classes, which is a hopeful indicator for the future.
In terms of college athletics, USC is a national powerhouse. Cohen stated, “I look forward to honoring the Trojan heritage while working alongside the incredible USC Athletics team as we embrace both the opportunities and challenges of this complex moment.”
