Her father is a Hughes Aircraft executive, and her mother is a housewife. Her uncle Tony Butala was the lead singer of the American vocal trio The Lettermen, and she has two siblings.

She began learning ballet at the Westside School of Ballet when she was five years old, but she had to stop due to an injury.
