When a sinkhole appeared beneath Jeff Bush’s home in Seffner, Florida, he was dozing off. According to The Guardian, the hole is about 6 meters (20 feet) wide and deep. His brother Jeremy and Jeremy’s partner Rachel can hear it from another room.
Now, Rachel told ABC Action News, “We heard Jeff screaming.” We entered the back door after running down the hallway, I turned on the light and all we could see was a big hole. Jeff has left.
A Hillsborough County sheriff had to drag Jeremy to safety after he plunged into a hole to try to save his brother as the ground kept collapsing around him.
“I don’t care that the floor is still sinking and the ground is falling. According to Jeremy, I wanted to save my brother. But I couldn’t do anything.
I swear I heard him call me to support him. Bush’s body was swallowed by the sinkhole along with bedroom furniture, and rescuers could not find it. The next day, engineers decided that trying to rescue anyone else from the house or the ground was too risky, so it was demolished and the pit filled with gravel. A few years later, the site – now banned to visitors – saw the sinkhole reopen.
Florida, which is rich in limestone, is particularly susceptible to sinkholes.
The U.S. Geological Survey explains that sinkholes are most common on “limestone terrain,” as geologists call them. These are areas where many rocks below the surface of the soil can be naturally dissolved by groundwater flowing through them. Gypsum, limestone, and other carbonate rocks are examples of soluble rock, along with arches and salt seams.
The caves are left below the surface when the underlying rock has dissolved. A sinkhole is created when an unstable surface collapses into a cave. They range in size from microscopic to gigantic structures seen at Xiaozhai Tiankeng, also known as Xiaozhai Paradise Pit. The world’s largest sinkhole is said to be 662 meters (1,667-2,172 feet) deep and 537 meters (1,762 feet) wide.
