After 68 years of providing services to consumers in the community, Jean Ingram has put an end to it. And those she left behind commented that there would be no one like her.

After graduating from Ayr Grammar School at the age of 15, Jean, now 83, began her career in retail. She has run her business, Brass Hopper and Table Topper, with an ironic respect for many years.

While her husband, Alex, became a legend of Ayr United, Jean is well known as the town’s source of gift ideas.

But even she admits that the new High Street’s tight grip has finally caught on to her cunning ways.

She commented, “I think the writing was written on the wall a long time ago. A lot of Ayrs have been left behind as consumption patterns have changed.

“I’ve always been very fortunate to have dedicated clients, and I still am to this day, but last year I started to notice a real difference in the way my business was conducted.

“I’m going to be a very busy idiot trying to get this done,” I thought when it reached that point.

In Newmarket Street and Queen’s Court, where she has been active for the past forty years, Jean has long been admired. Over the years, her establishment has become a favorite destination for shoppers in the community. “I cannot look back with regret,” she said.

I was proud when the Ayrshire Post called Newmarket Street “the jewel in Ayr’s crown,” but I realized it was time to let it go. When companies like Watt Brothers struggle to succeed, you know the game is over.

“There needs to be a rethink and a more coordinated approach to the council if shopping in the town is to flourish.” Traders from different companies came together to wish Jean an intimate farewell on Friday.

The adjoining Le Monde cafe, managed by Nino and Karen Pajovic, has coordinated flower deliveries from neighbours.

“Jean is an institution,” adds Nino, “and he always greets us when we go out.” Karen further commented: “There will never be another like her, and to trade for as long as her is truly amazing.

Jean is the inspiration behind everything on this street, according to Jim McSherry, the innkeeper at Wee Windaes on Newmarket Street. Without her, Ayr would be a lot poorer and she would be greatly missed. Gift shop owner Jools Linda Mitchell continued: “She is unique and we all adore her so much.
