For Jared Greenberg, it all started when he enrolled in an elective course in television production at Mahwah High School. Greenberg, a freshman mostly surrounded by seniors, is passionate about sports and athletics and aspires to gain the skills needed to compete at a high level.
Although he admits that he struggles academically and athletically, he maintains a passion for professional sports and regularly listens to the radio, watches ESPN, and follows other sports news.
One day in class, Greenberg’s high school instructor informed the class that Ramapo University’s WRPR 90.3 FM radio station was looking for high school volunteers to operate the board and that the music program would aired.
Greenberg made the most of the opportunity as he was anxious to find a way to continue playing the sport professionally. Greenberg, then 14 years old, recalls being driven to the station by his father on his first day there and turning on the FM transmitter. At the time, he knew he wanted to work in radio communications.
After a period of broadcasting music, he asked the radio station management about organizing a talk show about sports. The station embraced the idea and gave him the opportunity to pioneer. Then he asked permission to publish game-by-game for some college basketball and baseball games.
Greenberg stated that compared to other activities at the university, “I spent more time at that radio station and [was more] join there.” “I recognize the value of education and the need for classroom learning, but I believe gaining real-world experience is the key to success in this field. The real-world experience is something that I believe has been neglected in university radio and television stations.
Greenberg completed a public relations internship with the New York Giants near the end of his academic career. Shortly after, however, Greenberg was called in briefly after radio statistician Bob Papa was unable to appear for a home game. Greenberg did his best to correct immediately.
