Janet Blakey obituary: Lifeways of Canada Assistant Project Archaeologist passes away inCalgary

Calgary, Alberta – The archaeological community mourns the loss of Janet Blakey, a dedicated Assistant Project Archaeologist at Lifeways of Canada, who passed away tragically at the age of 48, leaving her family and friends devastated. Her untimely demise was confirmed through a heartfelt Facebook post by Lifeways, where colleagues expressed their deep sorrow at her sudden and unexpected passing.

Janet Blakey, born on March 12th, 1975, in Winnipeg, was a remarkable graduate of the I.B. program at Kelvin High School. Her passion for leadership and building lasting connections began during her youth, as she actively participated in the YM/YWCA Leadership program, cherishing her experiences at Camp Stephens and Camp Manitou. She pursued her academic journey at the University of Winnipeg, where she earned bachelor’s degrees in both Arts and Science with Honours.

Janet’s heart was drawn to the field of Archaeology, leading her to relocate to Calgary in 1999. She joined Lifeways of Canada in 2001, embarking on a career that spanned over two decades. During her illustrious tenure, which exceeded 20 years, Janet worked on a multitude of projects in various regions, including southern Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and even Chile.

Janet leaves behind cherished memories in the hearts of her surviving family, including her brother, Winston; sister-in-law, Andrea Murray; nephew, Thomas; niece, Sydney, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and other extended family members. She was predeceased by her loving parents, Don and Mary Blakey.

Informal celebrations of Janet’s life will be held in both Winnipeg and Calgary to honor her memory. In Winnipeg, friends and loved ones will gather on Sunday, October 22nd, at 2 pm in the Galleria at St John’s College, 92 Dysart Rd. The Calgary memorial is scheduled for Saturday, November 4th, with details regarding time and location to be announced soon.
