Plainfield, Illinois – The Plainfield community is mourning the loss of a beloved educator and cherished member, James “Jim” Mulyk, who passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at the age of 47. Jim, a resident of Plainfield, was widely respected as a Professor of Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois.
Born on March 9, 1976, in LaGrange, Illinois, Jim grew up in Bolingbrook, Illinois. He was a loving brother to Vicki Grant and John Mulyk, and a devoted son to John and Marianne Mulyk. Jim was a dedicated father to Vanessa and Cameron Mulyk, Emily, and Camryn Knobbe, and a devoted husband to his late wife Sharon Mulyk and the late Kimberly Mulyk.
Jim’s passion for culinary arts began at a young age, and his journey in the food service industry started early. He joined Marriott International at just sixteen and displayed exceptional zeal and ambition, quickly rising in his field. He held a BA in education from Northwood University in Midland, Michigan, and earned two MAs in education from Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois, and Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island.
Before his tenure at the College of DuPage, Jim spent ten years as the Food and Beverage instructor at the Technology Center of DuPage in Addison. He passionately taught juniors and seniors at DuPage High School, sharing his knowledge in hospitality and restaurant management. His dedication to teaching was unmatched, evident in the impact he had on his students, both past and present.
Jim’s enthusiasm for the culinary world was contagious, and he often spoke about the unwavering motivation and passion required in the food service industry. He joined the College of DuPage in 2011 as a full-time faculty member, continuing to inspire and mentor aspiring chefs.
In addition to his contributions to the culinary world, Jim was an active member of the community, attending Bolingbrook’s Westbrook Christian Church. He was an avid supporter of the Chicago Bears and White Sox, and he enjoyed traveling, boating, and golfing.
The cause of Jim Mulyk’s passing has not been disclosed publicly, leaving the community in mourning and reflecting on the impact he made in the lives of countless students and colleagues. His legacy as an educator, mentor, and community member will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
