James Gordon Wolcott News
James Gordon Wolcott, then 15 years old, killed his parents, sister and other family members in 1967. Until 1974, he was hospitalized for a mental illness. Before becoming a professor at a university, he disappeared into the dark. Gordon B. Wolcott, professor at Southwestern University, his wife Elizabeth and their 17-year-old daughter Elizabeth were found shot dead at their home in Georgetown, Texas on August 5, 1967.
A.22 caliber rifle was used to shoot each of them. With two gunshot wounds to the chest, Gordon was discovered in the living room. Two gunshot wounds to the left side of the skull of Elizabeth Sr. was discovered in her bed. Elizabeth Jr was discovered in her bed, shot once in the heart and once in the right eye. Gordon and Elizabeth were both pronounced dead on the spot, but Elizabeth’s father passed away shortly after being rushed to the hospital.
The murders terrified the small community of 5,000 people. The Wolcott family, well known in the community, resided on College Street near Southwest University in a sizable white-framed house. It was expected that Elizabeth would graduate from Georgetown High School as valedictorian.
Even if the murders themselves are gruesome, the small community is in awe of the killer’s identity. James Gordon Wolcott, the Wolcotts’ 15-year-old son, is being held for the murder of the couple while their remains are being moved to the morgue.
Around 4:30 a.m., Wolcott jumped into a passing vehicle after the murder. He said his parents were shot dead by a passenger in the car. He pointed them in the direction of where they “started finding bodies everywhere”.
Wolcott had an outstanding academic record at Georgetown High School and was an exemplary citizen. He is a peace fighter, has a high IQ and has been involved in Methodist youth ministry. He admitted to the murders almost immediately after being taken into custody.
He quietly expressed his frustration with his mother’s obnoxious chewing and his sister’s “bad voice”. He complained that his father disapproved of his anti-Vietnam views and prevented him from going to Austin to participate in anti-war protests. In court documents, it was said that Wolcott believed his family was “conspiring against him to drive him insane.”
