News Jackie Kennedy
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis received a Valentine’s card from her ex-boyfriend, architect Jack Warnecke, during the last months of her life. He told her that the former first lady was often on his mind.
Jackie died of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma on May 19, 1994, at the age of 64, according to a new biography of J. Randy Taraborrelli titled Jackie: Public, Private, Confidential, quoted exclusively in issue this week. The letter is said to have caused a reunion at her apartment a few months before her death.
Jackie fell in love with the architect who created President John F. Kennedy’s memorial site at Arlington National Cemetery three decades ago.
Years later, Warnecke told Taraborrelli about his memories, but with a restriction. Warnecke asked to keep everything a secret until ten years after his death out of loyalty to the famously private Jackie. When he was 91 years old, he passed away in 2010.
These insights are now just a few of the many eye-opening details revealed in Taraborrelli’s new biography. According to him, “A lot of Jackie’s books are about glitz and glamor. I want to discuss the human side of my post.
When John Warnecke arrived at 1040 Fifth Avenue to meet Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, it was already dark outside. The apartment was silent and in the dark. “Jack” or John Warnecke observed a telescope in the corner. Jackie once admitted to often looking there to see how the other half is living. He could see the light of one of the rooms. She was sitting near the fireplace, wearing white silk pajamas over a pink chenille sweater. While one of them was still alive, Jackie urged Jack to keep what was about to happen to everyone a secret.
When I sat down, Jackie handed me a stack of envelopes neatly tied with yarn, Jack recalls in [our] interview in 1998. That night, I was there as part of the ceremony. She invited a trusted friend or family member to her house every night that week to participate in it.
Undoing the thread, Jackie picked a letter from the stack of books. Before throwing it in the fire, she read it. He recalled having letters from John and Caroline, Jackie’s children. In addition, there are letters from me, Jack Bouvier, Aristotle Onassis, her father, Jack Bouvier and Jack Kennedy. She held up one of the photos and examined it intently. On his inauguration day, Jack [Kennedy] and she was together.
