Ishmael, originally from Fenton, Michigan, left behind a deep love for the outdoors, particularly his passion for hunting. His passing, reportedly by suicide on Tuesday, September 5th, 2023, has left friends and family grappling with grief, as expressed in a heartfelt social media post.
Ishmael Nolan Bender, born and raised in the picturesque town of Hartland, was a young man with a profound connection to the great outdoors. From a young age, he developed a deep love for hunting, finding solace and excitement in the thrill of the hunt. Whether it was tracking deer through the woods or patiently waiting for the perfect shot, Ishmael embraced the world of hunting with unwavering enthusiasm.
His passion for hunting extended into the online world, where Ishmael became an active member of various hunting-related Facebook groups. One of his cherished affiliations was with the Michigan Bow Hunters Association, a community of archery and bow hunting enthusiasts. Here, he shared techniques, hunting stories, and his dedication to the craft with like-minded individuals.
Whitetail hunting was another of Ishmael’s great passions, and he was an engaged member of the Whitetail Hunters group on Facebook. Among fellow deer hunters, he exchanged tips, celebrated successful hunts, and reveled in the pursuit of these elusive creatures.
But Ishmael’s interests didn’t stop in the woods. He had a love for music, particularly folk and bluegrass. As a member of the Michigan Folk & Bluegrass Pickers group on Facebook, he connected with others who shared his appreciation for these harmonious sounds.
In addition to his love for big game, Ishmael was part of the Michigan Small Game Hunting Group, where he discussed the intricacies of pursuing smaller game like rabbits and squirrels. This group allowed him to diversify his hunting experiences and connect with those who appreciated the unique challenges of tracking and taking down quick and elusive targets.
Beyond his passion for hunting, Ishmael had a keen interest in preserving the history of outdoor pursuits. He was an active participant in the Michigan Vintage Hunting, Fishing & Trapping Collectors group, where he shared his collection of vintage gear and memorabilia while also learning from other collectors who shared his commitment to preserving the heritage of outdoor sports.
