In a surprising turn of events, two-time Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu revealed his divorce on social media, merely three months after announcing his marriage. The 28-year-old figure skater cited ongoing issues with slander, stalking, and intrusive media reporting as reasons behind the decision.
Hanyu, who enjoys a global fanbase, initially shared news of his marriage on August 4, intentionally keeping his partner’s identity private, emphasizing that she was not a celebrity. However, recent developments prompted the athlete to address the challenges they faced, including targeted stalking, slander, and unauthorized media coverage affecting both him and his partner’s family members and associates.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Hanyu expressed his desire for his partner’s happiness without any restrictions, leading to the difficult decision to divorce. His limited life experience made it challenging to ensure their safety amid the intense scrutiny.
Hanyu’s management company also issued a plea to the press to respect their privacy in a separate statement on the same post. The figure skater retired from competitive skating last year after securing a fourth-place finish at the Beijing Winter Games, missing a chance to claim a third consecutive Olympic gold.
Hailing from Sendai in the Tohoku region, Hanyu made history by winning the men’s singles competition at the 2014 Sochi Winter Games, marking the first time a non-European or non-American figure skater had achieved the Olympic title in the event. In 2018, he defended his gold medal at the Pyeongchang Games, securing a historic repeat not seen since American Dick Button accomplished it 66 years earlier. The skater, who received the People’s Honor Award at the age of 23, now faces a personal challenge amidst unwarranted public intrusion into his private life.
