Mel Tucker, the head football coach at Michigan State University, is facing serious allegations of sexual misconduct brought forward by Brenda Tracy, a well-known rape survivor and activist dedicated to raising awareness about sexual abuse in sports.
Tracy and Tucker had initially joined forces two years ago to combat the prevalence of sexual violence in sports, aiming to have a positive impact on the issue. However, their alliance has now turned into a scandal, with Tracy accusing the coach of engaging in the very behavior they both condemned.
Mel Tucker, one of the highest-paid coaches in all of sports, is at the center of this controversy. Brenda Tracy, the rape survivor and advocate, is the accuser.
Their working relationship, based on Tracy’s advocacy efforts, had developed over eight months. Tucker extended three invitations to Tracy to visit his campus: one to receive an honorary captaincy at the team’s spring football game and two more to address his players and staff.
Tracy alleges that Tucker invited her to speak to student athletes about her harrowing experience of being raped by three Oregon State University players and a high school recruit 25 years ago. Brenda Tracy bravely accepted the invitation and was recognized by USA Today.
Tracy has received multiple invitations to Michigan State University to address the MSU football team and receive recognition for her advocacy through her non-profit organization, Set the Expectation. Even the honorary captain of last year’s spring game was named in her honor. Tracy has delivered inspiring speeches to thousands of athletes on over 100 college campuses.
However, Tracy claims that her interactions with Tucker took a disturbing turn on April 28, 2022, when he initiated non-consensual phone sex.
Tracy strongly asserts that she did not authorize this behavior and made a complaint to the school in December 2022.
In response to Tracy’s complaint, Tucker denied her allegations when questioned by a Title IX investigator retained by MSU to investigate the matter.
When approached by a USA Today reporter regarding the situation, Tucker declined to comment. In a letter to the Title IX investigator in March, Tucker stated, “Ms. Tracy’s distortion of our mutually consensual and intimate relationship into allegations of sexual exploitation has really affected me.” Although Tucker acknowledged that he was not particularly proud of his judgment, he insisted that he had not violated any rules of conduct.
