Biography of Irene Cara

Cara, born in the Bronx, New York City, to a Puerto Rican father and Cuban mother, began playing the piano at an early age and by ear.

She started dancing at the age of five. Her acting career began on Spanish-language television; she told Cosmopolitan Magazine in 1985 that she “never doubted” that she would succeed.

The cause of Irene Cara’s death has been revealed. According to an external autopsy report obtained by ET, the actress died of cardiovascular disease caused by arteriosclerosis and hypertension.

Diabetes is listed as a contributing condition in addition to hardening of the arteries, which is a buildup of substances in and on the walls of arteries, and hypertensive cardiovascular disease, which refers to heart problems caused by caused by high blood pressure. According to reports, Cara died naturally.

Cara died in November at the age of 63. Cara’s agent, Judith A. Moose, confirmed the news at the time.

Moose said: “On behalf of her family, I am deeply saddened to announce the passing of Irene Cara. “The Academy Award-winning actress, singer, songwriter and producer has passed away at her home in Florida.”

Moose added, “She is an amazingly talented soul whose legacy will live on forever through her music and film.”

Cara, best known for her role as Coco Hernandez in the 1980 film Reputation and played the main character in the musical in 1976 twinkleco-wrote the hit song “Flashdance… What a Feeling” for the 1983 film dance flashmod. The song won Cara the Academy Award for Best Original Song and the GRAMMY Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

After Cara’s death, her friends and former co-stars paid tribute to her, with Lee Curreri noting that “it’s hard to imagine that Irene is no longer on this planet, but I do she could definitely be seen lighting up the sky,” and Jennifer Beals remembers her as “excellent” and a “triple-threat talent.”
