Islamabad – Imran Khan, Chairman of PTI, has announced that his governments in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will dissolve their assemblies on 23 December in preparation for new elections. Imran acknowledged that he had consulted PTI’s lawyers about the move and thanked the two governors for their cooperation with his party. He also stated that the Constitution forbids elections to be postponed more than 90 days after the dissolution of parliament.
Imran announced a month ago that his party would leave two provincial councils to move away from the “current corrupt political system”. The leaders of the PML-N and the PPP, the main force behind the government of the Pakistan Democratic Movement, strongly opposed the decision to dissolve the council. Imran began his speech by declaring that the nation demanded “new and fair elections” because “we fear the country is drowning.”
Imran began his speech by comparing the performance of the government with the current economic situation of the country. He lamented the country’s ongoing brain drain, saying skilled professionals are leaving in large numbers.
“Today, I want to know: “Who is responsible for this regime change?” referring to the vote of no confidence earlier this year, which led to the downfall of his government, he said.
According to Imran, rising unemployment and inflation, as well as a decline in foreign confidence in the country, led to a drop in investment.
“Our credits are growing. There is only one solution we have taken: promoting the prosperity of the nation. The government lacks a strategy.”
Imran worries that the government may try to delay elections beyond October.
Imran claims that the government is “afraid” of new elections for fear of losing and that free and fair elections are the only solution to the country’s problems.
He expressed concern about the possibility that the government will not hold a general election even in October 2023.
