Ice Skating Olympian, Katya Alexandrova passes away after suicide in Moscow

Moscow – The sports world is mourning the untimely death of Ekaterina ‘Katya’ Alexandrovskaya, a Russian-Australian Olympian and talented figure skater. She was just 20 years old when she tragically fell to her death from a balcony in Moscow. The circumstances surrounding her passing have raised questions, casting a shadow of sadness over the skating community.

On July 17, 2020, Katya’s life came to a tragic end when her lifeless body was discovered in the basement of the Moscow apartment complex where she had been residing with her mother. Belinda Noonan, her coach and former figure skating champion of Australia, expressed her disbelief at the situation, disputing initial suspicions of suicide despite a troubling note left behind by the young skater.

The note, bearing a simple message, “I love,” prompted authorities to conclude that Katya’s shocking death was a result of suicide. Her struggles were exacerbated by her father’s passing while she was living in Sydney, leading her to turn to excessive drinking as a coping mechanism. Financial hardships also weighed heavily on her, as her mother was unable to provide for her, and the funding for her ice skating pursuits had been severely reduced. She often found herself sleeping on friends’ couches.

In an effort to support Katya, Coach Noonan would take her to the grocery store to ensure she had enough to eat. Concerned about rumors that she was attending training under the influence of alcohol, Noonan arranged for her to see a professional psychologist.

In January, Katya sent Ms. Noonan a text message, explaining that she would not be able to attend training due to illness. After two weeks of observation, she received a diagnosis of epilepsy, which brought an end to her skating career. This abrupt change in her life plunged her into deep sadness and despair.

The figure skating community and beyond are left in grief and disbelief, mourning the loss of a talented athlete whose life was cut tragically short. Katya Alexandrovskaya’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and support for individuals facing difficult circumstances.
