Huguenot Tunnel reopens amidst mudslides and rockfalls in Cape Town

The South African National Roads Authority (Sanral) has provided an update on the status of the Huguenot Tunnel, saying it is now open to all vehicles traveling from Cape Town to Worcester. The tunnel had been previously closed due to unfavorable weather conditions, including mudslides and rock slides caused by heavy rain and strong winds in the Western Cape since Sunday.

According to Sanral, Class 1 vehicles, including light motor vehicles, are now allowed through the tunnel from Worcester to Cape Town. However, heavy vehicles are still not allowed to pass because the truck lane is covered in mud and there are large rocks blocking the R101.

Du Toitskloof Pass, another affected area, continued to experience landslides and rocks. Provincial traffic police officers are present to guide drivers to alternative routes.

Sanral’s Project Manager, Mike Vinello-Lippert, confirmed that emergency services are actively working to clear the road and fully reopen the tunnel to all types of vehicles. Vinello-Lippert urges drivers to be patient, vigilant and adhere to speed restrictions during these difficult weather conditions.
