How Do You Pronounce ‘Vase’? (Video)

Depending on where you’re from, you can pronounce ‘vase’ in one of three main ways. Is one of them considered “standard”? Peter Sokolowski explains.

TRANSCRIPT

When someone brings you flowers and asks if you have anything to plug in, you can say “Yes, there’s a vase in the cupboard.” That’s how you would say if you were like most Americans. If you were like most Canadians or some Americans, you would say vāz. But if you were British or like some Canadians or even some Americans, you would say väz. Vās, vāz, väz. They are really fine, no matter where you come from. Whatever you say, the important thing is: when someone brings you flowers, be polite and put them in the water.
