Holly Springs, Chapmanville, WV – The Holly Springs Police Department is in mourning as they bid a heartfelt farewell to their loyal K-9 Officer, Justice. This beloved German Shepherd devoted his life to safeguarding the Holly Springs neighborhood and its residents. Tragically, he passed away in the line of duty, leaving a profound void in the hearts of those he protected.
Justice served alongside his lifelong trainer and devoted companion, Sergeant Melissa Ottaway, for many years. His unwavering dedication to duty and the community he served was a testament to his character.
In a statement released by the Holly Springs Police Department, they said, “We bid farewell to a true hero, a beacon of hope, and a loyal friend.” Justice’s impact on both the department and the community is immeasurable, and his memory will forever endure.
After a distinguished career in law enforcement, Justice retired to spend his later years in the loving care of Sgt. Ottaway. His favorite pastime was relaxing in the evenings, savoring his preferred food and playing with his beloved toys.
Every officer at the Holly Springs Police Department, every child comforted during outreach programs, and every community member protected by Justice will carry his legacy in their hearts. The department emphasized, “He was a true hero who will be missed by all who knew him.”
In a separate tribute, the Amherst Police Department also said their goodbyes to a dedicated K-9 officer, Czar, who recently passed away. Czar, a purebred black male German Shepherd, was born on September 23, 2009. He underwent rigorous training to become a narcotics detection K-9, excelling in identifying substances like marijuana, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamines, and their derivatives.
Amherst Police Chief Mark Cawthon shared, “In addition to being trained in detecting the odor of narcotics, Czar was trained in article search and tracking.” Czar’s training was overseen by K-9 trainer and retired police Officer Tim Russell from TWR Canine. Following four months of intensive training, Czar joined the police force, forming a strong bond with Officer Cawthon.
“After a screening process, Czar and I partnered up and attended a canine training academy as a team for three and a half months,” Cawthon explained. “At the end of the training, he was certified by the Ohio Peace Officers Training Council, which is the same agency that certifies all the police officers in the state of Ohio.”
Both Justice and Czar leave behind legacies of dedication, loyalty, and service that will be remembered by their respective communities and the law enforcement agencies they served with honor.
