After justifying the decision to turn off the sirens during a wildfire, the emergency chief of Maui resigns.
According to Mayor Richard Bissen, Chief Herman Andaya resigned, citing “health reasons.” His resignation is effective immediately, leaving an opening at the helm of the emergency department as the devastated island deals with the fallout from the blaze that claimed at least 111 lives.
Mayor Bissen said in a statement, “Given the nature of the issue we are facing, my staff and I will be placing someone in this critical position as swiftly as we can and I look forward to making that announcement shortly.
Andaya’s suitability for the position was called into doubt after he received strong criticism for his decision to warn Maui people to flee as flames advanced toward their houses.
When strongly pressed by a reporter who implied that the system might have saved hundreds of lives during a media briefing on Wednesday, the former MEMA leader asserted that he does not regret not sounding the deafening alarms.
Andaya claimed that the loud sirens are normally used for tsunami warnings and that when they sound, Hawaiians are educated to move to higher ground. However, wildfires are one of the calamities that the “all-hazard” might be used for, according to Hawaii’s official government website.
Andaya added, “Even if we had sounded the siren, we wouldn’t have been able to help those individuals out there on the mountaintop.
He also defended his professional record, telling reporters that before assuming the principal post in 2017, he had undergone a rigorous screening process and received intensive training. However, Andaya’s only direct experience with emergency management comes from working with the organization when employed by the housing department and as a member of the mayor’s cabinet.
Rescue teams announced that 111 individuals have been discovered dead as of Thursday after searching through at least 45% of the burn area; however, as officials continue to sift through the debris, the death toll is expected to rise.
While tens of thousands of homes and businesses are still without electricity, thousands of displaced citizens have been housed in shelters, hotels, and Airbnb accommodations.
Investigations are being conducted to determine what caused the flames, which are already the deadliest in the US in more than a century.
