Halee Rathgeber, a 20-year-old nursing student at Southern Indiana University, was killed. Her body was discovered with a gunshot wound to the head at a football facility in Warrick County, about 15 miles from her owner. Authorities also discovered that her things, including her wallet, phone and keys, had disappeared from the scene.
Due to a lack of forensic and physical evidence, authorities began questioning Halee’s friends and family after learning that she was with Isaiah Hagan the night of her death. Hagan said he left her at the soccer facility, but phone records and blood evidence discovered at his home suggest otherwise. On Outskirts of Town, an episode of Dateline: Secrets Unbroken on Oxygen will explore Halee Rathgeber’s 2017 shooting death on Wednesday. The show will air on the channel on February 8, 2023, at 11 p.m. ET.

1) A gunshot wound to the head was determined to be the cause of Halee Rathgeber’s death.
Halee Rathgeber, a 20-year-old nursing student at Southern Indiana University, was found shot dead in the parking lot of the Alcoa Soccer Complex in Warrick County on April 24, 2017. A mother and daughter Her car was driving across the parking lot a lot of people found her dead on the gravel. A blue scarf was found next to her body and it looks like she was shot in the back of the head. Furthermore, none of her items were discovered at the murder site, including her wallet, phone, and keys. Her cause of death was determined to be two successful autopsies of a gunshot wound to the head.
2) The incident occurred after Halee’s shift at Texas Roadhouse.
Halee was fatally shot during her shift at the Texas Roadhouse in Evansville, about 15 miles from the murder site, according to sources. She was invited to have a drink with her friends that night, but she declined, preferring to study in the library with her friend Ansley. But her intentions changed when she went to see another friend named Jordan at 10pm to get her wallet. Jordan is dating Thaddeus Rice, who is despised by his co-workers.
3) Thaddeus Rice was the first suspect in the murder of Halee Rathgeber.
Because police lacked evidence in the early stages of the investigation, they questioned people close to the victim. This is where Thaddeus Rice’s name comes up as a possible suspect. Authorities discovered that Halee had previously been questioned in connection with a separate murder case involving a suspect and her alleged friend Rice. Thaddeus Rice was later identified as the leading suspect in the case because police felt that if Halee had revealed information about Rice at that time, he would have had an ideal reason to kill her. When another suspect was identified during the investigation, he was quickly ruled out as the killer.
4) Halee Rathgeber’s friend Isaiah Hagan is stationed at the murder site.
The investigation then turned to Isaiah Hagan, a friend of Halee Rathgeber who had a history of stealing or borrowing money. According to accounts, he also took money from victims, which officials say started the feud between them. Authorities discovered that Hagan had met the victim the night before the murder. He said he dropped Halee at the soccer facility, where she was supposed to meet someone else. Hagan later said that he tried to call Halee around midnight but she didn’t answer.
A week after her murder, the FBI, who had been recruited to assist, was able to obtain Halee Rathgeber’s mobile data. The data revealed that their movements on the night of the crime were similar. At around 11pm, their phones were spotted walking to the soccer field, then Halee’s phone went off. However, it came back on around 3:20am before shutting down.
5) Hagan’s mother testified at his second trial, which certainly contributed to his conviction.
Isaiah Hagan’s first trial ended in a mistake. During the second trial, his mother spoke in court, alleging that he had confessed to her about accidentally shooting Halee Rathgeber. She also testified in court that Hagan had thrown the murder weapon in the trash. He was convicted of three counts, including murder, obstruction of justice and robbery resulting in serious bodily harm, based on his mother’s testimony and other substantial circumstantial evidence. He was sentenced to 60 years in prison in 2018.
