Henry Dargan McMaster (born May 27, 1947) is the 117th Governor of South Carolina and a Republican Party member. He has been in office since January 24, 2017. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of South Carolina in 1969 and a Juris Doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1973.

Henry McMaster was born in Columbia, South Carolina, on May 27, 1947. He is John Gregg and Ida Dargan (Pet) McMaster’s eldest son. In 1969, he earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of South Carolina. According to his education, he was an undergraduate member of the Kappa Alpha Order and the South Carolina Student Legislature. He graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1973, where he was a member of the South Carolina Law Review’s Editorial Board. Later that year, he was admitted to the South Carolina Bar’s Richland County Bar Association. He served in the United States Army Reserves until 1975 when he was honorably discharged.

McMaster was elected Chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party on May 8, 1993. In 1996, 1998, and 2000, he was re-elected by the State Republican Convention. From 1993 to 2002, he was also a member of the Republican National Committee in this capacity. Under McMaster’s leadership, the Republican Party won the governorship, other statewide positions, the State House of Representatives in 1994, and the powerful State Senate in 2000. South Carolina Republicans ran very acrimonious and victorious presidential primaries under McMaster in 1996 and 2000.McMaster announced his retirement as party chairman on March 28, 2002, in order to run for Attorney General in 2002.
