Career
Gulnur started climbing at the age of 17 at METU’s Mountain & Winter Sports Club. She has climbed more than 30 high mountains in Türkiye, Russia, Georgia, Nepal, Argentina, USA and elsewhere. She originally visited Nepal in 2004 for hiking and data collection for my PhD thesis. research on risk marketing and risk consumption.
Only 12 women in the world have climbed the “Eight Peaks” as of today. Her ambition is to be Turkish and the first Turkish woman to climb all eight peaks. She completed McKinley (6,194 metres), Aconcagua (6,959 metres), Kilimanjaro (5,895 metres), Elbrus (5,642 metres) and the Pyramid of Carstensz (4,884 metres). She attempted to climb Everest in April 2014, but failed because the trek to the summit was officially halted due to a massive avalanche. On May 21, 2018, she made her second attempt and became the first Turkish woman to climb Everest from the Nepalese side. She has also taught at the University of Utah, the American University of Beirut, the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis in France, the University of Innsbruck in Austria, and other institutions.
